Kia ora caregivers, families and whānau
The opening weeks of the year at St John’s College have been marked by both deep sadness and uplifting moments of connection, energy and renewal. We farewelled a treasured colleague, Mr Craig Ireland, while also witnessing the enthusiasm and brotherhood that our interhouse events and the start of a new academic year always bring.
Craig’s passing has been felt profoundly across our community. In our reflection there has been sorrow, but also joy, humour and a deep sense of gratitude for the extraordinary contribution he made to the life of the College. Craig was an inspirational educator whose passion for culinary arts transformed opportunities for our young men. He was the driving force behind the establishment of the Culinary Arts programme and the Culinary Institute, leading students to national competitions where St John’s College was consistently among the top performers. His professional expertise was recognised nationally when he was voted the best in his field by his peers.
Beyond the classroom, Craig’s impact was immense. From catering countless school and staff functions, to the much-loved Taco Cart that became a feature at events across the region, including the Mission Concert, he shared his gifts generously. He supported our young men in sport, most notably as the Manager of the 1st XV, and volunteered his time to many trips and activities. Above all, he was a life-changing teacher who taught with heart, upheld the mana of his students and colleagues, and modelled a deep respect for his craft. He will be greatly missed, and we continue to hold his family in our prayers.
Notwithstanding the passing of a colleague, the year has begun in a very positive way. Our interhouse events have brought wonderful spirit to the College. The 40-Man Relay and our annual Athletics Day were powerful reminders of the brotherhood that defines St John’s College - healthy competition alongside genuine encouragement, care and support for one another. It was also heartening to see so many parents and caregivers present, strengthening the partnership between home and school. We now look forward to our annual Swimming Sports next week.
As we move forward, we do so together - supporting one another, honouring those who have shaped us, and continuing to provide an environment where every young man is known, challenged and inspired to become the best version of himself.
